Liam Williams has opened up on his move to Newcastle Red Bulls, which came after a period of time without a club, as he looks to support his young family.
Liam Williams has spoken candidly about his rapid switch to Newcastle Red Bulls and the obstacles he's navigating with a young family. The celebrated Wales full-back put pen to paper with the emerging PREM Rugby outfit on a 12-month deal after a spell without a club.
The 34-year-old had been clubless since departing Saracens at the campaign's conclusion, spending time keeping fit with former side Cardiff Rugby. Earlier this month, the renowned back three star confessed to the BBC that he had faced psychological struggles whilst training in isolation.
Nevertheless, the Welsh icon has now secured fresh employment as he strives to provide for his family and further his storied career.
Williams has now detailed precisely how rapidly events unfolded regarding his relocation north.
"I only spoke to Dimes on Tuesday," Williams told the Daily Mail, speaking last Thursday. "So - come up, have a quick chat with some of the physios, have a look at my body and stuff and check everything's fine.
"(I'll have a) chat with Dimes (Steve Diamond) now, my agent's been speaking to him, so I'll go and have a quick chat as well and wait for our flight back home this evening."
Williams was then asked about the situation following his medical. "I'm more or less ready to go," said Williams. "I just need a couple of days to sort out my life back home and then come and move up then."
It was then suggested that Williams could do with a fast-moving company to help with the move, to which he replied: "Yeah, well I have one - my cousin's husband, so I've already been speaking to him.
"So I'll probably come up here on my own for the first little bit, because I can't just move my wife, the baby and the dog straight up.
"We'll have to do something with our house and have a look on the market, see what's available to rent. Preferably something with some sofas in!".
Diamond then spoke afterwards, with the Red Bulls boss revealing how he met Williams ahead of the move. "Yeah, really good lad. Met him a few times, latterly on holiday, actually. He was around the pool in the same hotel as me," explained Diamond.
"In Mallorca, where I get my 'false tan' from, you know. It's not a fake tan! Contrary to what our senior players say."
Now that he's secured a club, Williams will be hoping to earn selection for Wales during the forthcoming autumn internationals, as well as the Six Nations in the new year.
Nevertheless, just a few weeks ago, with doubt still surrounding the full-back's future, he hinted that his international career might already be finished.
"I fear that the international ship has sailed," said Williams to the BBC. "I've not called time on that but it would be impossible without a club. If I start playing regularly and there are some injuries in the back three then Steve [Tandy, head coach] may give me a call."
Williams presently holds 93 Wales caps and five Lions caps, meaning he requires seven more appearances to reach a century for his nation, and two additional caps to achieve a Test century.
