Josh Schuster's stint with South Sydney appears over after the club informed him his contract won't be renewed beyond this season.

The former Manly prodigy was handed a lifeline by Wayne Bennett in April 2024, signing a one-year 'prove it' deal after parting ways with the Sea Eagles.

But the 24-year-old has struggled to find form and continuity, making just five appearances in the NSW Cup and failing to crack the NRL side.

Schuster took an indefinite break from rugby league in June to focus on his mental health, and while he returned at reserve grade level, it wasn't enough to convince the Rabbitohs to persist.

"Unfortunately it hasn't worked out," reported Code Sports, as confirmation came that the Rabbitohs will move on from the Tongan international.

Schuster isn't the only one facing the exit door. Prop Shaq Mitchell, older brother of Latrell, and young winger Fletcher Myers have also been told they won't be part of the squad in 2026.

Meanwhile, the club is in talks to extend fullback Jye Gray until the end of 2028, signalling a clear change of direction under Bennett's watch as the Rabbitohs look to reshape their roster.
