AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A local non-profit is continuing to help those experiencing homelessness or transitioning from incarceration.
The non-profit Blount Beginnings held a community cleanup to pick up trash around Broad Street on Wednesday.
Volunteers were able to clear the area of debris and meet with people experiencing homelessness with the hopes of connecting them to resources.
Founder Devarion Blount tells us this is their second year bringing the community together for this event.
He explains that the overall goal is getting people to the next level.
"There are a lot of children around the area because, again, school is out, parents don't know what to do, it's kind of hard to get a job when kids aren't in any daycare. So being able to see exactly how we can help people here get to the next level," said Blount.
This was a family event, and organizers say this was a great way to show the younger generation the power of community and giving back.
"You're never too good to serve your community," said Andre Lacey, head golf coach at Paine College. "I think a lot of people can lose sight of that because they reach a certain status or their finances are a little better than others, but you should always spend some time cleaning up those places that are underserved."
Lacey says this wasn't just about picking up trash, it was about lifting up spirits of those in our community.
"People just need encouragement," said Lacey. "If they see you out here working for nothing, and just trying to simply do better, it may inspire them to do better. We may say something that could encourage them to step away from a drug or step away from committing suicide, so it's just simply serving the community and trying to reach those who need a little push."
