The New England Patriots are a much better football team on paper than they were last season, but they didn't play much better in Sunday's regular season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders.
They showed some signs of life in the first half of the game. The defense started getting consistent pressure on Raiders quarterback Geno Smith, and the offense started to get into a rhythm.
And then the second half happened.
The Raiders' defense got pressure on Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, and the inopportune penalties started to come. Smith began to find his receivers and beat the blitzes more effectively. In the blink of an eye, the tide turned in New England.
Even worse, the Patriots seemingly had no answers to stop it. Pete Carroll and the Raiders rolled over New England for the better part of two quarters to come out on top in the opener, 20-13.
