Three Norfolk State baseball players -- outfielders Jalan Jones, Justin Journette and Jamal Ritter -- have been selected to play in the HBCU Swingman Classic on July 11 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
The game, set to start at 7 p.m. and be televised by MLB Network, will take place during MLB All-Star Week. Truist Park is the site of the 95th Midsummer Classic.
Jones and Journette will play for the American League team, managed by former Braves star David Justice. Ritter is on the National League team, managed by Brian Jordan.
Journette led the Spartans with a .331 batting average, 15 homers and 45 RBIs. Jones hit .320 with eight homers, 33 RBIs and 12 stolen bases, and Ritter hit .313 with eight homers, 27 RBIs and 24 stolen bases.
It will be the second straight year that Journette and Ritter have been chosen to play in the game.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Offensive tackle Buddy Wegdam of Woodberry Forest High in central Virginia has committed to Virginia Tech, according to 247 Sports and Tech Sideline.
The 6-6, 280-pound three-star recruit chose the Hokies over Michigan State, North Carolina State and Duke among others.

The Virginia High School League has announced that Princess Anne High principal Todd Tarkenton has been named its assistant director for compliance.
Tarkenton has 30 years of leadership and education experience as a teacher, coach, principal and central office director of instruction. His new position will take effect on Aug. 1. His position fills the vacancy created by Ty Gafford's replacement of Billy Haun as Executive Director, which is effective June 30.
Tarkenton has been Princess Anne's principal since 2022, and he was Green Run's principal for the previous nine years. He also has served as the VHSL's Executive Chairperson from 2022-23.

Sydney Miller scored the go-ahead goal in the 89th minute as the Virginia Beach United women overcame Virginia Atlantic WFC 2-1 Tuesday night in the USL W League's Hampton Roads rivalry.
Mary Boateng scored in the 43rd minute to give host Virginia Atlantic the lead at Powhatan Field in Norfolk, only to see United's Shyenne Diaz net an equalizer in the 60th.
Miller, a former First Colonial High star who soon will enter her second season with the Tennessee Volunteers, broke the tie and ensured that VBU (5-3) would be in second place in the Chesapeake Division. Virginia Atlantic fell to 0-7 and is last among the division's five teams.
In the second game of the Powhatan Field doubleheader, Virginia Beach City FC's men played the Alexandria Reds of Northern Virginia to a 1-1 draw in the National Premier Soccer League.
The Reds went ahead in the 20th minute, but VBCFC responded with a goal in the 68th. It was the first tie of the year for VBCFC (2-4-1), and the Reds went to 3-0-4.
