While Isaiah Oliver didn't follow in the footsteps of his father, Dean Oliver, on the basketball court, he might with where he goes to college.
Oliver, who will be a senior at Waukee Northwest High School in the fall, recently received a preferred walk-on opportunity with the Iowa Hawkeyes to play football. His dad was a standout on the basketball court for the Hawkeyes after an all-state career leading Mason City High School to the state championship.
Last year, Oliver, a 6-foot wide receiver, caught 36 passes for 430 yards and scored six touchdowns. Those numbers ranked second on the Wolves behind Jordon Green, who will be a junior this coming season.
Oliver also made a handful of tackles on defense and was one of the top returners for Waukee Northwest, averaging 31 yards on his seven touches on special teams.
Along with his success on the football field, Oliver does play basketball, starting six games while playing in all 27 last winter for the Wolves, who reached the Class 4A state finals. He posted 131 points with 52 rebounds, 40 assists, 25 steals and 14 blocks, shooting 43 percent from the field.
According to Blair Sanderson of On3.com, Oliver has offers to play football from South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota State and Northern Iowa. He told Sanderson that he is visiting Iowa City this weekend and "was planning to camp at Kansas State on Sunday but have canceled that."
