José Mourinho has left Fenerbahçe by mutual consent after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League.
The decision came on 29 August, days after Benfica beat the Turkish side in the play-off round. Mourinho, who built his reputation on success in Europe's top competition, was understood to be deeply frustrated by the exit.
When he arrived in the summer of 2024, he promised passion and fight, even telling fans, "This jersey is my skin." The supporters loved it, and for a while, hope was high. His record wasn't bad either, 37 wins in 62 games. But football isn't about wins. Fenerbahçe finished second in the league, 11 points behind Galatasaray, and crashed out of the cup and Europe without lifting a trophy.
Tensions grew along the way. Mourinho complained about referees and argued with rivals. His fire kept things entertaining, but the moment the Champions League dream slipped away, so too did his time in Istanbul.
In the end, Mourinho leaves with memories and flashes of what-ifs, but no silverware.
