LOCAL ROUNDUP: Dates, teams set for HiToms football jamboree

HIGH POINT -- For the fifth time, football teams from across the area will play in the Triad Kick-Off Classic jamboree in High Point.

Over a dozen schools -- including 10 from the Enterprise's coverage area -- will participate.

The event, hosted by the High Point-Thomasville HiToms, will be Wednesday, Aug. 13, and Friday, Aug. 15, at the High Point Athletic Complex. Varsity matchups will be at A.J. Simeon Stadium while JV matchups will be at the adjacent Aderholdt Track.

Teams from T.W. Andrews, High Point Central, Southwest Guilford, High Point Christian, East Davidson, Thomasville, Ledford, Wheatmore, Bishop McGuinness and Ragsdale, as well Randleman, Southwestern Randolph, Jordan-Matthews and Providence Grove will participate. The schedule and matchups have yet to be set.

There will also be skills challenges for quarterbacks, kickers and punters, and linemen.

SOFTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION NAMES ALL-STATE TEAMS

TRIAD -- Eight players from area teams have been selected to the N.C. Softball Coaches Association's all-state teams.

Ledford's Hailey Hoots, Leah Leonard and Cassidy Murray, as well as Oak Grove's Mary Peyton Hodge, Izzy Lawrence, Chloe Smith and Harper Sugg were chosen in the 3A. Southwest Guilford's Makayla Stefanik was selected in the 4A.

ROCKERS PITCHERS' CONTRACTS PURCHASED

HIGH POINT -- High Point Rockers starting pitchers Tommy Doyle and Matt Solter have had their contracts purchased by teams in the Mexican League.

Doyle will join the Leones de Yucatan while Solter will play for the Toros de Tijuana. That brings the Rockers' total to nine players whose contracts have been acquired by a Major League team or foreign league this season and 48 overall.

Doyle began the season as the team's closer, earning five saves. He transitioned into a role in the starting rotation in June and made four starts. For the season, Doyle was 1-3 with a 4.02 ERA and five saves.

Solter has been a fixture in the Rockers starting rotation, making a team-high 10 starts and posting a 7-2 record with a 3.50 ERA. Solter set the club record with three complete games this season and pitched a pair of shutouts.

KRUGER NAMED BOYS BASKETBALL COACH AT HPCA

HIGH POINT -- Ronnie Kruger will be returning to High Point Christian to coach boys basketball.

Kruger was an assistant coach under Joseph Cooper from 2016 to 2020 as well as the JV boys head coach. He later coached at North Raleigh Christian and Wake Christian.

Kruger, who won two state championships as a player at Grace Christian of Sanford, played in college at Central Carolina Community College and Piedmont International University. He's coached at a variety of levels for 14 years.
