Liverpool soccer star Diogo Jota dies in car crash in Spain

STORY: Liverpool's Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother died in a car crash in northwestern Spain early on Thursday, when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames, authorities said.

Evidence at the scene of the crash near the city of Zamora suggests Jota's car suffered a burst tire while overtaking, Spanish police said in a statement.

The crash occurred around 00:30 a.m. (2230 GMT).

"It doesn't make sense. We were only just in the national team together, you'd only just got married," fellow Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo said on X.

At the Anfield stadium in Liverpool, fans laid flowers in his memory.

"I'm devastated. Devastated. It's like unless if you are part of the football family, people probably won't get it, but it's like you knew him. And he was so young. Kids and just can't believe it."

Jota's brother, Andre Silva, also a footballer with Penafiel in Portugal, died alongside him.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also offered his condolences, describing the news as "unexpected and tragic."

Diogo Jota, who made 49 appearances for Portugal and won the UEFA Nations League twice, was a key figure in both his national team and Liverpool.

He joined Liverpool in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances.

Jota was adored by fans and achieved remarkable success with Liverpool, helping them win the Premier League and other major trophies.
