SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) -- South Charleston is used to having success but it's been a few years since the Black Eagles have reached the levels they are used to.

In 2025, returning head coach Donnie Mays offers promise for the community.

"It's not about me, it's about the community of Dunbar and the community of South Charleston," Mays said. "It's about what these kids work on this football field to do and get accomplished.

"We're just excited to be able to try to change that as a coaching staff."

South Charleston is ready to come back stronger than they have in a few years.

The Eagles are not shying away from the work as they've put in effort in the offseason to move South Charleston in the right direction.

"I feel like we've been working really hard over the offseason," said senior running back and wide receiver Malcolm Brown. "In the weight room, Coach Mays is getting us right. We're getting on the field and working hard, studying over our plays.

"I feel like we can really bounce back from the last couple seasons and 0-10 seasons, and really change the views and perspectives of South Charleston High School."

Can the Black Eagles bounce back in 2025? That's the big question heading into this season. A program that once hoisted titles is trying to show they're ready to get back to where they feel they belong.

South Charleston kicks off its season Friday on the road against Ripley.
