Argentina claim first-ever victory on home soil against New Zealand

Argentina made history as they beat New Zealand on home soil for the first time in their history. Tries from Juan Martin Gonzalez and Gonzalo Garcia as well as 13 points from the boot of Santiago Carreras gave the home side the win, meaning all four sides in the 2025 Rugby Championship have one win and one loss from their first two games.

Tomas Albornoz gave Argentina an early lead with a penalty but Beauden Barrett brought New Zealand level from the tee. Juan Cruz Mallia then restored Argentina's lead with a penalty after Albornoz was forced off injured.

New Zealand hit the front on the 20-minute mark as Billy Proctor scored the first try of the match from close range before Fletcher Newell increased the All Blacks' advantage with a try of his own.

The hosts got back on level terms courtesy of a try from Saracens' Gonzalez. New Zealand then went down to 13 men with Will Jordan and Tupou Vaai shown yellow cards and it was all square at 13-13 at half-time.

Carreras' two penalties gave Argentina a six-point advantage before Garcia's try on the hour mark extended the hosts' lead.

Samisoni Taukei'aho's try kept the All Blacks in touch. But, after Sevu Reece's yellow card with just under 10 minutes to go, Carreras added another penalty to secure Argentina's first-ever win on home soil against the All Blacks.

Earlier today South Africa beat Australia 30-22 in Cape Town. In round three in two weeks' time, Argentina travel to Australia whilst New Zealand host South Africa.

That is it and Argentina make history, beating New Zealand on home soil for the first time. They win 29-23 in Buenos Aires and the home fans are delirious.

McKenzie gets the kick from 40 metres out to get a losing bonus point for the All Blacks.

New Zealand win a penalty on the Argentina 10-metre line and, as the clock ticks into the red, the Alll Blacks will have to go for goal to get a losing bonus point.

Argentina are offside just outside the New Zealand 22 but time is ticking away for the visitors. They may have to settle now for a losing bonus point.

Into the final minute we go.

Argentina are given a free-kick at the lineout and can clear their lines. Big mistake from Taukei'aho. The hosts can sense victory now.

Argentina are offside on their 10-metre line. What do New Zealand decide? Go for goal or kick into the corner? They go for the latter but the kick goes into touch on the 22.

A huge scuffle has broken out and the TMO is going to have to check all this out. McKenzie attempted a quick kick-off, which hit an Argentina player and then all hell broke loose but no action is taken against either side and we just resume with a kick-off.

S Carreras gets the kick and Argentina's lead goes out to nine points.

New Zealand are offside just outside their 22 but the home fans are calling for a deliberate knock-on by Reece. The TMO intervenes and it is a clear deliberate knock-on by Reece, who should really be shown yellow and he is. That is the third yellow card of the night for the All Blacks.

Argentina are going for goal in an attempt to make it a two-score game.

This game is still very much alive. New Zealand win the lineout and set the maul. It gets rolling and Taukei'aho breaks off and scores. McKenzie nails the touchline conversion and there are just six points in it with just over 10 minutes left.

From the scrum in centre field, New Zealand come to their right and McKenzie finds Reece on the right wing. He is bundled into touch by Cinti and Chocobares within five metres of the try line. However the ball came off Argentina last so New Zealand will have the five-metre lineout.

Argentina infringe at the maul and New Zealand will have another penalty just five metres out from the try line. Referee Nic Berry is giving a warning to Argentina captain Montoya. The next penalty conceded by Argentina in this area will result in a yellow card.

New Zealand opt for the scrum.

Argentina are offside inside their own 22 and New Zealand have a penalty advantage. The ball comes loose so we go back for the penalty. McKenzie puts it into the corner...

New Zealand's pack dominates a scrum on halfway and McKenzie kicks towards the Argentinian 22.

Garcia's night is over and he is replaced by Benitez Cruz.

Argentina are extending their lead. Matera picks from the base of the ruck and he powers his way to within inches of the line. Garcia picks up quickly from the base of the ruck and scores. S Carreras adds the extra two and Argentina now have a 13-point advantage.

After a New Zealand lineout goes too long, Montoya capitalises and takes Argentina into the All Blacks 22. The ball goes forward off a New Zealand hand and Argentina will have the scrum 10 metres out from the All Blacks line.

The All Blacks have brought McKenzie on for B Barrett. Tosi is also on in the front-row

New Zealand come in at the side at a ruck on halfway, with Jordan the guilty man. Argentina captain Montoya points to the posts once more...

Argentina ring the changes in the pack as Tetaz Chaparro, Sclavi, Petti and Kremer are all on. A lot of international experience coming on for the hosts.

That is a bad miss. B Barrett drags his effort wide of the left post so we remain all square at 13-13.

New Zealand are now back up to 15 men with Vaai returning from his yellow card.

Delgado, has agreed to join Harlequins next season, is penalised for holding on near his own 10-metre line and, with it being in a central position, the All Blacks will go for goal to take the lead...

New Zealand have made a change in the front-row as Williams has replaced de Groot at loosehead prop.

New Zealand have one of their two men from the sin-bin back on as Jordan returns to the field.

We are back under way in Buenos Aires. New Zealand will start the second half still down to 13 men but Jordan will be back on soon.

That is it for the first half in Buenos Aires and we are all square at 13-13. New Zealand did well to negotiate the latter stages of that half down to 13 men.

Argentina come so close to scoring but the pill is dropped forward. Delguy sprints down the right touchline, into the New Zealand 22. He cuts inside a few defenders and gets close to the try line but a tackle from B Barrett dislodges the ball and it goes forward.

With the All Blacks down to 13 men, Argentina attack from a scrum inside their own half and break all the way to the edge of the New Zealand 22. Cinti does brilliantly down the right wing and offloads to Delguy, who is brought down five metres out from the New Zealand line.

Argentina really should score, especially with a two-man advantage but Gonzalez is held up. That was perhaps too selfish from Gonzalez.

The hosts do not need that penalty advantage. The Saracens man powers his way over from close range and stretches out to score. The extra two are added and we are all square in Buenos Aires. To make matters worse for New Zealand, they are now down to 13 men after a deliberate knock-on by Vaai in the build-up to the try.

Chocobares is back on after temporarily going off. Five metres out from the New Zealand line, where the M Carreras chip ahead landed, Argentina opt for a scrum.

S Carreras finds M Carreras with a beautiful crossfield kick and, as he approaches the New Zealand 22, M Carreras puts a chip kick ahead. Reece cannot gather the ball properly deep inside his own 22 and the ball rolls into touch.

Mallia opts to take the lineout quickly and the All Blacks have to scramble in defence. New Zealand do brilliantly though, forcing Argentina back and then securing a turnover before clearing.

However the TMO has stepped in to check whether Jordan impeded M Carreras as the kick was put through. Argentina had taken a quick lineout so we presumed it was play on but the officials decide they can go back. They decide it is a cynical act by Jordan and he is sent to the bin.

A great finish from a tighthead prop. New Zealand come down their left and Newell carries powerfully from around 10 metres out through a few tackles and scores in the corner. He ran onto the pass at pace and the Argentina defenders could not stop him. B Barrett cannot get the conversion but the All Blacks lead by seven points.

Savea carries powerfully and is brought down just shy of the Argentina line. The All Blacks are then pushed backwards before Argentina knock on in a tackle.

We have already seen a number of injury-enforced changes for both sides and Argentina are make another as Piccardo is on for Chocobares.

B Barrett pumps his kick into the 22.

For the first time today the All Blacks ahead. The ball is shipped out to the left wing, where Ioane is brought down just shy of the Argentinian line. New Zealand recycle it quickly and Christie picks up from the base of the ruck. He finds Proctor, who cannot be stopped from very close range. B Barrett's conversion slides by the right post but the All Blacks lead by two.

The discipline from both sides so far is not great as Argentina fall foul of referee Nic Berry's whistle as Matera goes off his feet at the breakdown on his own 10-metre line.

New Zealand have been forced into a change as Ratima goes off clutching his chest. Christie is on in his place as New Zealand kick into the Argentina 22.

S Carreras is put through a gap by a well-timed pass by Mallia from just inside the Argentinian half. S Carreras sprints into the All Blacks half and offloads to Gonzalez, who is brought down just shy of the New Zealand 22. A grubber kick is then put through but New Zealand gather and clear their lines.

Mallia makes no mistake with his first penalty of the day and Argentina are back ahead.

The All Blacks are being hit with a number of offside penalties, the latest guilty player being J Barrett on the edge of his own 22. Unsurprisingly Argentina point to the posts. Albornoz has not been able to continue with that finger injury so Mallia is on kicking duty now.

B Barrett nails an easy kick from the edge of the Argentina 22 and we are all square at 3-3.

From a lineout for the visitors inside the Argentinian half, the hosts are pinged as their backline was offside and the All Blacks point to the posts...

The kick is nearly 50 metres out and Albornoz's effort goes wide of the left upright.

Holland is penalised for offside just inside his own half and Albornoz is going to take another shot at goal...

Albornoz was down for some time after being stepped on by his own teammate at a ruck but he is now back up on his feet and for now is going to resume playing.

Argentina are in possession on the fringes of the All Blacks 22 and they go through the phases, keeping it in the hands of the forwards. However Oviedo goes off his feet at the breakdown and New Zealand are given the penalty.

This is a concern for the home side as Albornoz has been down for some time receiving some treatment on a finger injury. It looks like a dislocation but play has gone on while he is receiving treatment.

Albornoz makes no mistake from the tee and Argentina take an early lead.

The first penalty of the match goes the way of the hosts as Savea is caught offside. We already have our first scuffle of the match but it settles down fairly quickly. The penalty is not far outside the New Zealand 22 and the hosts captain Montoya points to the posts...

After the haka, led by Taylor in his 100th Test for New Zealand, we are ready to get going. The stadium fell silent to witness the haka.

South Africa bounced back from their shock loss in Johannesburg to Australia with a 30-22 victory in Cape Town but it was not without some nerves as the Wallabies threatened another second-half comeback. That defeat for Australia means New Zealand could really cement their spot at the top of the table through two rounds and be the only side to win their first two games.

Round two of the 2025 Rugby Championship comes to a conclusion in Buenos Aires as Argentina take on New Zealand. A week ago in Cordoba, New Zealand claimed a bonus-point victory to go top of the table after one round. That win has taken the All Blacks to the top of the world rankings.

The All Blacks are without Patrick Tuipulotu and Anton Lienert-Brown, who have both flown home due to injury. It is going to be a special day for hooker Codie Taylor, who joins the list of All Black centurions. His head coach Scott Robertson has paid tribute to the hooker, who starts this evening.

"Codie is a great All Black," Robertson said. "He carries a huge amount of mana in our group, and it is important we put out a performance that makes him and his whanau proud in his 100Test. The way he carries himself and the example he sets are a testament to him as a person, and he will front this week in the same way he has for the past 99 Tests. Equally, it is a special day for Simon and his family. He has earned his selection through performance and consistency. He is a big, physical man, and he is ready to make an impact."

With back-to-back games coming up in Australia and no more games left to play in their homeland, Argentina will want to get on the board with a win on home soil. Their third 'home' game in the final round will be played at Twickenham in early October.
