Alan Shearer insisted there is "no chance" of Alexander Isak becoming Liverpool's number nine in the upcoming season.

The Reds are understood to be interested in the Newcastle United striker as they look to land a top striker at Anfield this summer, with Arne Slot's side already confirming notable arrivals in the form of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.

Isak would no doubt be seen as an ideal successor to Darwin Nunez, who is attracting attention from Serie A champions Napoli. And Liverpool are not alone in their pursuit; Arsenal have also been long-standing admirers of the Swedish forward.

However, Newcastle are obviously reluctant to part ways with Isak, especially after their Carabao Cup triumph, and the club values him at over £150million. Eddie Howe is not prepared to lose his top attacker, and there's no indication that Isak is eager to push for a move after the Magpies also qualified for the Champions League.

Nevertheless, Liverpool have demonstrated their allure in the transfer market this summer, securing high-calibre players for the 2025/26 campaign. On an episode of the Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker praised Liverpool's recent signings, stating he was "impressed" with their business so far.

Lineker said: "Liverpool have been very impressive so far, I think, with the signings that they've done. They've just completed Florian Wirtz for £116million, so it's a lot of dough for Bayer Leverkeusen. But he's a wonderfully talented player."

Rather prematurely, the former Match of the Day host also included Milos Kerkez, despite the Bournemouth left-back not having joined the Reds yet. Lineker added: "Kerkez, Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for around £40million, they join Jeremie Frimpong who signed a couple of weeks ago. All three are worth just under £200million."

The discussion then pivoted towards Wirtz's potential role at Liverpool, prompting Shearer to offer his view.

Speaking about the potential of an all-round attacking threat from the German, he said: "I think he'll be floating between the two. I think you'll have obviously Salah on one side and whoever on the other side, and it'll be him that'll be the 10, the forward or whatever, and they'll just sort of rotate and do what they have to do. I think that's where he'll play."

Spotting a chance to joke about Isak potentially swapping black-and-white for Liverpool red, Lineker added: "And Isak as the nine? Right?"

Shearer responded with a cheeky act, flashing his middle finger on both hands, and while grinning away, he replied: "No chance!"

Shearer's gesture shows just how desperate he is, like any fan, to see Isak stay at Newcastle. This is especially after the Swede's pivotal role in securing the team's first major silverware since 1955 by winning the Carabao Cup against Liverpool, and assisting them in reaching the new season's Champions League.

Isak's impressive tally for the 2024/25 season stood at 27 goals and six assists in 42 appearances, cementing his place as an integral part of Howe's side.

However, Liverpool have already shattered the British transfer record once this season with Wirtz, and could be looking to flex their financial strength to maintain their recent Premier League success.
