It's been a busy few weeks for Wishaw Men's Shed with a new location and a new patron for the organisation.

Meetings had been taking place at Cambusnethan Old Parish Church but now the shed has a permanent base in Gowkthrapple Community Centre.

Launched by a small group of men in the community, it offers the chance to sit and have a talk, and take part in a number of activities.

Robert McGinty, from Craigneuk, had been attending a men's shed in Carluke for a year when it was suggested that a Wishaw one be started up.

He said: "We have came a long way in a few short weeks.

"We were in the church in Cambusnethan but this move has given us a permanent base and that will help us.

"Our numbers have been growing steadily and we have also been sponsored by United Taxis and will be purchasing new Wishaw Men Shed fleeces with our new logo which incorporates the blue tower of Ravenscraig."

The men's shed has been given an extra boost with the news that four-time world snooker champion John Higgins has agreed to be the group's patron.

Robert added: "John has always been a great ambassador for Wishaw so when we were looking for someone to be our patron he was the obvious choice.

"When we emailed him and he said he would be happy to be involved we were delighted.

"He said it's a great initiative for the Wishaw area and is aiming to be with us at our official opening which will be held in the coming weeks.

"I'm quite sure a few of our members will be looking forward to having a game or two with him on our pool table!"

Anyone over 18 is welcome to attend including those supported by carers, as long as their carer remains with them.

Those interested can come along and take part in a variety of activities including pool, darts and cards.

The group is free to attend and takes place every Thursday from 11am to 2pm at Gowkthrapple Community Centre.
