A pub in Surrey that was saved from demolition by a group of locals has been named among the UK's best in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2026.

The UK's definitive guidebook to good pubs that serve real ale across the UK was released on Thursday (September 25), and features a list of community owned and community run pubs.

Boasting more than 150 years of history, and believed to be haunted, The Garibaldi in Redhill made it into the well-known guide.

Saved from demolition in 2017 by Friends Of The Garibaldi Community Interest Company, they are currently campaigning to raise funds to purchase the property before it goes on the open market in July 2026.

A social hub for the community, the thriving, not-for-profit pub run by volunteers, sees all profits reinvested back into the venue and its activities.

Currently operating under a lease, purchasing the building would allow them to secure the pub's long-term future and protect it as a community asset.

Every day the group appeals for donations, potential funders, investors and grant providers to make their dream happen. Notable for its tiled-roofed front and side veranda, the small Victorian pub in Mill Street has a buzzing social scene, offering a range of activities including live music, darts, karaoke, quizzes, raffles and brewery trips.

There are also television screens at either end of the bar often showing Sky or BT Sports. At least three beer festivals are run annually. The large garden, with views across Redhill, is popular among punters.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Garibaldi Gardening Group, the pub garden has been lovingly revamped into a flourishing community garden designed to provide a sanctuary and a social spot for all.

While only bar snacks are available to buy indoors, food trucks provide food from Thursday to Saturday. As well as the five cask beers, three craft keg beers are sold.

The ghost of Albert, a former coachman who used to tie his horse up outside, is reputed to sometimes sit at one end of the bar. However, he means no harm and just sits on a stool at the left hand side of the bar.

Open Monday to Thursday from 1pm to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm to 12am and Sundays 12pm to 10.30pm, The Garibaldi is both dog and family friendly (under 18s aren't allowed on the premises after 9pm).

Find it: The Garibaldi Pub, Mill Street, Redhill, RH1 6PA.
