Manchester United's positive transfer window could become even better if they manage to see of the competition of Newcastle United to land RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko.

Manchester Evening News understands United are advancing with a potential move for Sesko after receiving encouragement in their pursuit of the Slovenia international.

Aston Villa remain adamant Ollie Watkins is not for sale so United are now making their Sesko their number one target up front after missing out on their initial first choice Liam Delap.

It is believed Leipzig want around £65million plus add-ons and a percentage of any future sale to part ways with Sesko, who scored 21 goals in all competitions last season.

United's current forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee managed just seven league goals between them last term and, as such, any new forward signing is expected to move straight into Ruben Amorim's strongest United XI.

And after the summer signings of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, who scored 37 goals between them last season, Amorim could have a dream attack to play with next season.

United's tour of the USA has been very positive so far and they have recorded 2-1 and 4-1 wins over West Ham United and Bournemouth respectively.

While it is only pre-season, there are signs that the players are starting to take Amorim's instructions and play in the image of a manager who tasted great success while coaching in his native Portugal.

And there are also signs that his strongest XI for their opening Premier League game against Arsenal in just over two weeks' time is becoming clearer.

Andre Onana should regain his fitness to start in goal, while a back three of Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire seems most likely.

Amad has impressed in pre-season and looks set to start the season as a right-wing-back while Patrick Dorgu, who scored in the win over Bournemouth, will look to make strides in his first full season at United at left-wing-back.

Bruno Fernandes is set to start in a deeper midfield role and Manuel Ugarte will likely get the nod alongside him, although Kobbie Mainoo may provide stern competition after his performance against West Ham.

While United fans are yet to see a glimpse of Mbeumo, he is expected to partner Cunha in the two attacking midfield roles and, in a dream scenario, they will flank Sesko up front.

United have plenty of time to get a deal done for Sesko and could compound an already difficult summer transfer window for Newcastle that has seen them miss out on deals for Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and James Trafford.
