Former Indian businessman Vijay Mallya was once one of the most flamboyant personalities in the country. He owned United Breweries and Kingfisher Airlines. For years, he ruled headlines, not just for his business empire, but also for his luxurious lifestyle. He was famously called the "King of Good Times."
But life took a sharp turn for Mallya. His dream airline, Kingfisher Airlines, ran into massive losses in the late 2000s. To keep the company afloat, Mallya took loans of around Rs. 9,000 crore from various banks. Despite this, the airline couldn't recover and eventually shut down.
Soon after, Mallya was slapped with charges of fraud and money laundering. By 2016, as legal troubles mounted, he quietly fled to the UK -- leaving behind a trail of controversies in India.
Fast forward to today and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the IPL team that Mallya originally founded, finally ended their 18-year-long wait for an IPL title this year.
It wasn't just a sporting win, it was an emotional moment for millions of RCB fans who stood by the team through thick and thin. Over the years, RCB was packed with superstars, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle -- but that elusive trophy had remained out of reach.
Finally, after years of heartbreak, RCB triumphed. Social media exploded with joy. But amid the celebrations, one post caught everyone's eye -- from none other than RCB's first owner, Vijay Mallya.
Despite being away from India and branded a fugitive, Mallya hasn't lost his emotional connection with RCB. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the team:
"RCB are IPL Champions finally after 18 years. Superb campaign right through the 2025 tournament. A well balanced team Playing Bold with outstanding coaching and support staff. Many congratulations! Ee sala cup namde!!"
He followed it up with a nostalgic post:
"When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru. I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years. I also had the honour of picking Chris Gayle the Universe Boss and Mr 360 AB De Villiers who remain an indelible part of RCB history.
Finally, the IPL trophy arrives in Bengaluru. Congratulations and thanks again to all who made my dream come true. RCB fans are the very best and they deserve the IPL trophy. Ee Sala Cup Bengaluru baruthe!"
His words have since gone viral and many are now curious: Where is Vijay Mallya today?
Despite facing several extradition attempts by the Indian government, Vijay Mallya continues to live in the UK. Over the years, he has been spotted attending events, cricket matches, and parties in London. Reports suggest he resides in a luxury mansion in Hertfordshire, a property worth millions of pounds.
While he faces legal hurdles, Mallya still seems to enjoy the high life. He is often photographed at social gatherings, and occasionally posts on social media. He remains active on X, where his RCB post became the talk of the town.
One thing is clear, even though Vijay Mallya left India under a cloud of controversy, the RCB fan in him is very much alive. And for someone who once dreamt of seeing the IPL trophy in Bengaluru, this year's victory must have felt like a personal redemption of sorts.
