Many of us blindly pay our bills every month without checking the line items. Whether it's autopay or paying online, most people don't take the time to make sure that they're being charged properly.
An AT&T customer says she recently realized that she's been overcharged for her cell phone plan for two years. And she claims that her carrier, AT&T, is refusing to refund her.
Ashley (@ashleyforbes4) shared her story on TikTok late this week. She is definitely not happy with her AT&T.
"If you guys have AT&T, you might want to check your bills right now," she says. "Because tons of people are being overcharged."
Via email, AT&T told the Mary Sue that it needs more information about Ashley, such as her full name and contact information, to comment on the matter.
A surprise fee from AT&T
Ashley claims that she last adjusted their cell phone plan two years ago when she added their daughter to it. At the time, she says an AT&T employee told her she was going to get faster internet for free as a sort of thanks for being a loyal customer.
The company recently accidentally overcharged them one month, she says, so she took a closer look at the bill.
That's when she says she saw the fee for what she describes as "turbo internet."
This fee has been tacked onto her bill for the last two years, to the tune of over $200, she says.
AT&T isn't going to refund it, either, Ashley claims. She says a supervisor told her that she agreed to the service, so it will not refund her the $200-plus.
Ashley's not buying it. "This is bullcrap because there should be some sort of paper trail of me signing agreeing to pay more money," she says.
Now she wishes she had checked her bill sooner and hopes other AT&T customers do the same.
"If you're an AT&T customer, I highly recommend [you] go look at your bill because they are probably putting extra things that you have no idea you signed up for," she says.
She might even change cell phone companies.
"We are like this close to switching. This is awful customer support," she says.
Are there good cell phone companies?
Judging by the comments, people have beef with most major cell phone carriers in the United States.
People blasted Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T repeatedly in response to Ashley's post, which has 663,000 views as of this writing.
"All cell phone companies are doing this and getting away [with it]. They know we need phones," lamented one.
While the Federal Communications Commission has more strongarm pricing regulations for traditional landlines, cell phone companies are largely allowed to set their own prices.
Some defended their cell phone carriers, including AT&T.
"Ok I have had At n T for 25 + years and I'm just saying i have never had an issue with my billing. I mean I check it all the time if I need to question something but I have never had an issue," wrote one.
Many shared that they've switched to smaller cell phone companies and have been happy with the pricing and service. One suggested switching to Cricket, which is owned by AT&T but is prepaid.
"That's why you switch to Cricket same towers way cheaper service," they said.
Ashley didn't immediately respond to a request for comment sent via TikTok direct message.
