Rishabh Pant fractured his foot during the England tour, and has been out of action ever since. Now, chief selector Ajit Agarkar has given massive update about his injury.
The selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)- led by Ajit Agarkar recently announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming West Indies series, which has two Test matches from October 2 to 14. Among the main exclusion is wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has been out of action since the England series earlier this year.
Rishabh Pant fractured his foot in the Manchester Test when he attempted a reverse sweep off a delivery by Chris Woakes. The ball hit the inside edge of his bat and caused the injury. However, on the very next day, Pant still came out to bat and played till he was properly dismissed.
Rishabh Pant is currently undergoing through a rehabilitation programme at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Pant is expected to begin working on his strength and conditioning, with further medical reports waiting before he continues batting and wicketkeeping. The BCCI is not in any sort of hurry for Rishabh to mark his return.
When the West Indies tour ends, Indian side is set to tour Australia for Three ODIs and five T20Is. That white-ball series will be followed by a crucial South Africa tour for 2 Tests, 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is. Considering the importance of this complete tour, chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Rishabh Pant might gain complete fitness ahead of the South Africa tour.
"Rishabh Pant not fit for West Indies series, hopefully will be available for home Tests against South Africa," Agarkar said in a press conference on Thursday.
In the absence of Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel has been picked as India's first-choice wicketkeeper for the West Indies tour. Dhruv was also the one who was keeping the wickets in Rishabh Pant's absence during the England tour, and is currently playing against Australia A in Lucknow.
