MCC Introduces New Rule For Catches Near Boundary

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has introduced significant changes to the rules regarding boundary catches. These updates will soon be part of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) playing conditions. The revised law stipulates that an airborne fielder can only make one contact with the ball beyond the boundary before returning to the field to complete a catch.

Previously, fielders could juggle the ball multiple times in the air outside the boundary, provided they didn't touch the ground. This rule change was prompted by Michael Neser's remarkable catch during the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023. The MCC plans to incorporate this new regulation into its laws by October 2026.

Relay Catch Rule Adjustments

The MCC has also updated rules for relay catches. In a relay catch, a fielder catches and throws the ball to a teammate before crossing the boundary. Under the new rule, the initial fielder must remain inside the field when their teammate completes the catch. If not, it will be considered a boundary.

This adjustment ensures that both fielders are within play boundaries during such instances. The ICC will adopt these changes in its playing conditions this month, reflecting a shift towards stricter regulations on boundary-related plays.

Michael Neser's catch isn't an isolated case of juggling beyond boundaries; Matt Renshaw performed similarly in BBL 2020. These instances highlighted potential loopholes in existing rules, prompting necessary revisions by cricket authorities.

The MCC's decision underscores its commitment to maintaining fairness and clarity in cricket laws. By addressing these specific scenarios, they aim to ensure consistency across international matches and domestic leagues alike.
