Middlesex College marked a "significant step forward" in its Community, Innovation, and Opportunity Strategic Investment Plan with a ceremonial steel beam signing last week.

The event showcased four major construction projects that are "transforming the campus into a regional hub for education and community engagement," county officials said.

Local, state, and federal officials toured the Destination Athletic Complex at Thomas A. Edison Park, the Middlesex County Innovation Magnet School, the Multipurpose Community Venue, and the Middlesex College Student Center.

"This is more than steel and concrete -- it's about building a future where education, innovation, and community come together in one place," Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement.

The CIO Strategic Investment Plan, first announced in November 2022, includes several facilities currently under construction.

The Multipurpose Community Venue and Middlesex College Student Center both broke ground in January, while work on the Middlesex County Innovation Magnet School began in March.

The Destination Athletic Complex will feature 14 multi-sport synthetic fields, 16 tennis courts, and a state-of-the-art recreational cricket field.

Future phases of the plan include a Workforce Development and Conference Center, a community park with educational amenities, and enhanced outdoor spaces with public art and seating areas.

The tour concluded with the ceremonial beam signing near the Johnson Learning Center, marking a symbolic milestone in the county's transformation of the college campus into what officials describe as a dynamic center for education, workforce development, recreation, arts, and community engagement.
