Chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that Shreyas Iyer is not being considered for ODI captaincy in the near future
India cricket team chief selector Ajit Agarkar has categorically rejected reports of any discussions around making Shreyas Iyer the next ODI captain. Last month, there were reports claiming that the Mumbai batter was the frontrunner to succeed Rohit Sharma as the skipper for the 50-over format. While BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia did deny anything of that sort, Agarkar stepped forward to officially clarify that the topic has not been discussed at all.
Speaking at the press conference on Thursday, Agarkar pointed out that Shreyas being the India A captain had nothing to do with him being considered for captaincy in the future. He said that Iyer wasn't in the scheme of things, in terms of captaincy, even though he led India A in the 1st unofficial Test and was also the captain of PBKS in IPL 2025.
"I don't think we have discussed the ODI format yet. Shreyas is a senior player, he leads his franchise in IPL. He is one of the senior guys. He was captain of India A previously, doesn't mean we are looking at him as our Test captain. You're trying to find qualities of a leader in all lots of people. India A gives the opportunity," Agarkar said.
While Shreyas Iyer has never captained the ODI or T20I side, he has ample experience in leading Mumbai in the domestic circuit. He led the side in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024/25 in which he amassed 325 runs from 5 matches. Iyer also captained Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 and led them to the title. Iyer led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024 following which he was released by he franchise. In IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings finished at the top of the points table with 9 wins from 14 matches.
