Pune: A 17-year-old boy was mowed down by a tempo truck during a clash between two groups at Velu in Bhor taluka, about 25km from Pune, around 2.30am on Saturday over a cricket match dispute they had had two days earlier. Police identified the deceased as Avinash Satpute, a resident of Katraj. "We arrested five suspects in the case on Saturday and produced them before court on Sunday. They have been remanded to police custody till August 20," assistant inspector Tukaram Rathod of the Rajgad police told TOI on Monday. The suspects were identified as Samir Shaikh (25), Aniket Shinde (24), Suraj Pawar (28), Tanveer Pangare (18), and Digambar Pangare (25), all residents of Velu.On Saturday, the group of five men had told Satpute and three of his friends, all minors, to come to an area near Velu Phata to 'settle' the fight that had broken out on Aug 14, police said. The two groups argued near a service road in Velu Phata. The suspects first tried to attack the minors using a tempo traveller, but Satpute and his friends escaped. About ten minutes later, the suspects returned with a bigger tempo truck and ran the vehicle over Satpute, injuring his chest and legs. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The Rajgad police have registered a case under sections 103(2) (murder), 109 (attempt to murder), 189(2) (unlawful assembly), and 191(2) (rioting) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the matter. The deceased boy's mother has lodged a complaint with police in the matter.Rathod said both group members did not have a criminal record. He added that three of Satpute's friends have also been booked for rioting in a separate FIR registered in the matter as they were found with machetes during the incident.
