Trump Administration, ICE violate rights of people in arrests - Stephen Hardin

The Donald Trump Administration is deporting thousands of people who have no criminal record and have only committed the civil offense of entering this country without documentation. And there are increasing reports that some of the people detained are legal residents who have been victims of racial profiling.

ICE agents, who are usually masked when they make arrests, seldom make any effort to identify themselves and often intrude on private property without a warrant.

Those who are detained are often held for long periods of time in overcrowded facilities never designed for long-term detentions. Many are detained in privately-run prisons, which have little government oversight. And some detainees have reported that even federally run facilities have failed to treat prisoners humanely. Members of Congress who have attempted to assert their legal right to inspect detention facilities have often been harassed and turned away.

And many detainees who are deported risk reprisals in their home countries. Others are being sent to countries where they have no history or common language and are subject to penal systems with appalling human rights records. The Trump Administration justifies many of these deportations by invoking wartime powers, yet it is failing to abide by several of the Geneva Conventions that guarantee humane treatment of prisoners, as well as due process to those who are accused of crimes.

While declaring that they are ridding our country of violent criminals, Trump Administration officials and ICE agents are engaging in violent tactics that defy both federal and international laws.
